BOE Meeting for May 13, 2008

1.) Employee of the Month

Background: Each month the District honors employees nominated for their service to the District. This month we honor:
Noel Wiley, School Office Assistant
Tawanda Mitchell, Health Office Assistant
Debbie Cummins, SPED Paraprofessional, RSP
Shirley Pullen, Substitute Paraprofessional - Title One

Fiscal Implications: None

Superintendent Goal: Goal #4. Recruit and retain high quality employees.

2.) Public Appointment of Acting Principal, Encinal High School for the 2008-2009 School Year

Background: The Principal of Encinal High School has resigned for purposes of retirement in June, 2008. The Superintendent is recommending the appointment of Michael Cooper, current Vice-Principal from Encinal High School for the 2008-09 school year.

The Board approved the appointment.

Superintendent Goal: Goal #4. Recruit and retain high quality employees.

3.) Public Appointment of Acting Principal, Otis Elementary School

Background: The Principal of Otis has been promoted to the Student Affairs/Compliance Officer. The Superintendent is recommending the appoinment of Shirley Clem to the position of Acting Principal of Otis School.

The Board approved the appointment.

Fiscal Implications: None

Superintendent Goal: Goal #4. recruit and retain high quality employees.

4.) PUBLIC HEARING: Approval of 9-12 Science Textbook Adoption

Background: The commitee recommendations are:.

  • Biology: Miller and Levin, Biology 2004 Edition, Pearson-Prentice-Hall
  • AP Biology: Campbell and Reece, AP Edition Biology, Eight Edition, Pearson-Benjamin Cummings
  • Physiology: Marieb, Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology, Pearson-Benjamin Cummings
  • AP Environmental Science: Wright, Enivronmental Science, Tenth Edition, Pearson-Prentice-Hall
  • Physics: Hewitt, Conceptual Physics 2009 Edition, Pearson-Prentice-Hall
  • marine Biology: Kalreskint, Turner and Small, Introduciton to Marine Biology, Carngie Learning, Thomson, Brooks/Cole

The Board approved the textbooks.

Fiscal Implications: Purchased with testbook funds.

Superintendent Goal: Goal #1 Continue to improve student achievement while also narrowing and closing the achievement gap.

6.) Approval of Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators

Background: Each year the District identifies positions requiring waivers due to trouble hiring indiviudal with specific credentials.

The Board approved the declaration.

Fiscal Implications: None

Superintendent Goal: Goal #1 Continue to improve student achievement while also narrowing and closing the achievement gap.

7.) Approval of Resolution No. 08-0021 Intent to Dismiss Classified Employees, California School Employees Association (CSEA)

Background: California Education Code Section 45117 set forth dates and procedures by which the Board of Education must express its intent to reduce or discontinue particular kinds of services and give notice to classified California School Employees Association (CSEA) office/clerical and paraprofessional employees that their services may not be requireed for the ensuing school year.

Positions to be reduced or discontinued as follows:

School Office Assistant (EHS) 1 FTE (7 hrs)
School Office Assistant (Ruby Bridges) .125 FTE (1 hr)
School Office Assistant (Chipman) .125 FTE (1 hr)
Health Office Assistant (Ruby Bridges) .3125 FTE (2.5 hrs)
Paraprofessional, Title One (Haight) .375 FTE (3 hrs)

The Board approved the resolution.

Fiscal Implications: Estimated savings $77,322.

Superintendent Goal: Goal #2. Align spending plan.

8.) Approval of Resolution No. 08-0022 Intent to Dismiss Classified Employees, California School Employees Association, BLUE (CSEA Blue)

Background: California Education Code Section 45117 set forth dates and procedures by which the Board of Education must express its intent to reduce or discontinue particular kinds of services and give notice to classified California School Employees Association (CSEA Blue) maintenance, operations, and facilities and food services employees that their services may not be requireed for the ensuing school year.

Positions to be reduced or discontinued as follows:

Custodian (EHS) 4.0 FTEs (32 hrs)
Food Service Assistant 1, A total of 12 positions across the district totaling 11.5 hrs

The Board approved the resolution.

Fiscal Implications: Estimated $163,000 Savings.
