BOE Meeting for September 23 BOE Meeting

1.) Student Board Members Installation

Background: Each year student representatives were sworn in to serve on the School Board. This year the representative are:

Alameda High School - Deanna Quach
Alameda Science and Technology Institute - Jennifer Ramos
Encinal High School - Kelly Reed
Island High School - Student not selected yet

Fiscal Implications: None

2.) Public Appointment of Chief Financial Officer

Background: Luz Cazares left the District and is employed by Pleasanton Unified School District. The Superintendent presented Tim Rahill from Martinez Unified School District..

Superintendent Goal: Goal #4 Recruit and retain high qualified personnel.

3.) Employee Recognition for 25 Years or More of Service

Background: The Distitct recognized employees with 25 or more years of service.

4.) Proclamation: Walk & Roll to School Day & Recognition of Audrey Lord-Hausman

Background: This year will be the 8th Annual "Walk and Roll to School Day".

The Board of Education would also recognized Audrey Lord-Hausman, a driving force in establishing this and many other events and programs, for her years of service to the students and youth of Alameda.

5.) Superintendent Search Update" Community Feedback

Background: Superintendent Dailey announced her retirement in early July and her retirement is effective January, 2009. The California School Boards Association has been selected to conduct a search process for a new Superintendent. CSBA presented the community feedback from the two meetings and interviews.

The Superintendent reported that legal counsel advised us that a newly elected Board member has duties and obiligations of a Board member once they are elected. As a result, the Board agreed that the newly Board member(s) will be able to be present at the Board meetings regarding the Superintendent selection.

2008 Superintendent Selection Process

September 8 (Lum Elementary) and September 22 (Ruby Bridges Elementary) : Community Meetings

CSBA will be conducting one on one interviews with selected community and district stakeholders during the day. In the evening, CSBA will be faciltating broader community meetings at one West End school and one East End School. The purpose of the community meetings will be to solicit input about what the Board should be looking for in selecting the next Superintendent.
September 23 Board Meeting
CSBA will present a summary of community input at a Board meeting.
October 22 - Application Period Ends
Candidates will need to submit their application by this date.
November 15 and November 16 - Interviews
The November dates gives the existing Board the flexibility to accomodate newly elected Board members in the process.

6.) Public Hearing: Approval of Resolution No. 08-0047 Certification of Requirement of Education Code Section 60119 for Pupil Textbook and Instructional Materials Incentive Program for Grades K-12 for Fiscal Year 2008/09

Background: The District certifies theat they have adhered to all laws and to all State Board of Education rules, regulations and policies regarding the purchase of instructional materials.

Fiscal Implications: None

Superintendent Goal: Goal #1. Improve student achievement.

7.) Approval of Unaudited Actuals Financial Report

Background: Staff will present the Unaudited Actuals Financial Report for 2007-08.

9.) Approval of Resolution No. 08-0049 In the Matter of the Reduction of Classified Services, California School Employees Association (CSEA Blue Chapter No. 860, Maintenance, Operations and Facilities and Food Services)

Background: Two positions are being reduced or discontinued:

Lead Painter, 1.0FTE
