BOE Meeting for December 9 BOE Meeting

1.) Recognition of Outgoing Board Members and Superintendent

Background: Outgoing Board members David Forbes, Janet Gibson and Bill Schaff were recognized. In addition, retiring Superintendent Ardella Dailey was recognized.

Fiscal Implications: None

2.) Oath of Office for Board Members Elected November 4, 2008

Background: New Board Members will given the the oath of office and be sworn in by Alameda County Superintendent Sheila Jordan.

Fiscal Implications: None

3.) Election of Board President

Background: The annual organization meeting takes place at the December Board meeting. Each year, the Board of Education elects a President, Vice President, adopts the upcoming year's schedule of BOE meetings and takes committee assignments.

Board Member McMahon was elected Presdident.

4.) Election of Board Vice President

Background: The annual organization meeting takes place at the December Board meeting. Each year, the Board of Education elects a President, Vice President, adopts the upcoming year's schedule of BOE meetings and takes committee assignments.

Board Member Mooney was elected Vice Presdident.

5.) State Student Achievement Data: English Learners

Background: Staff made a presentation on student achievement for English Language Learners.

Fiscal Implications: None

Superintendent Goal: Goal #1 Improve student achievement.

6.) Curriculum and Instruction: K-5 Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Update

Background: Educational Services has selected two main instructional delivery strategies to improve student achievement. For the elementary schools, AUSD is using Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and for the middle and high schools AUSD is using Strategic Instruction Model (SIM). Staff provided an update on year two rollout of SIOP.

7.) First Interim Enrollment and Staffing Update

Background: Staff made a presentation on student student enrollment and staffing.

Superintendent Goal: Goal #2 Align fiscal resources Goal #4 Attract and retain quality employees.

8.) Approval of First Interim Report for 2008-09 Fiscal Year

Background: Staff made a presentation of the First Interim financials.

The Board approved the First Interim.

9.) Approval of 2009 Schedule of Regular Boad Meeting

Background: The annual organization meeting takes place at the December Board meeting. Each year, the Board of Education elects a President, Vice President, adopts the upcoming year's schedule of BOE meetings and takes committee assignments.

The Board approved the calendar.

Fiscal Implications: None

10.) Adoption of Board of Education Committee Assignments

Background: The annual organization meeting takes place at the December Board meeting. Each year, the Board of Education elects a President, Vice President, adopts the upcoming year's schedule of BOE meetings and takes committee assignments.

The Board members took committee assignments.
