Council hopeful Bail leads spenders

Friday, October 8, 2004 By Lucinda Ryan, Alameda Journal

The first income and expense numbers are in from City Council and school board candidates and the biggest spender so far is council hopeful Pat Bail.

Candidates who have war chests of $1,000 and more are required to report how much in monetary and in-kind contributions they have received, including any money the candidates contributed to their own funds, and how much they have spent. These figures are for the campaign period through Sept. 30.

Bail reported a loan of $55,000 from herself and her husband. Her total budget contributions add up to $58,182. Of that, Bail reported spending $12,124 including $5,500 to a caterer for a fund-raising party and $3,000 to a campaign consultant.

Her largest single contribution was $500 from an individual.

The other council candidates report these figures:

• Doug DeHaan: $8,858, of which he has spent $6,217. His biggest expense was $1,770 for signs. Largest single contribution: $500 from an individual.

• Ruben Tilos: $4,270 (in-kind $660), of which he has spent $1,496. Largest single contribution: $500 from an individual.

• Marie Gilmore (incumbent):$3,600. She reports spending $2,241 so far, of which $1,700 was for signs. Largest single contribution: $250 from an individual.

• Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft: From her fund of $1,800, Ashcraft reports spending $2,522. Largest single contribution: $750 from the Committee for Frank Matarrese (who won a seat on the council in 2002).

In the city treasurer and auditor uncontested race, neither Kevin Kennedy nor Kevin Kearny filed because their campaign funds were under $1,000.

School board candidates Vernice Boone, Karin Lucas and Bob Reeves also did not file expense reports.

Running on a single ticket for school board are David Forbes and William Schaff, who report spending a total of $9,100 from a pot of $13,090 ($175 in-kind contribution). Their single largest contribution is $500 from an individual.

Incumbent trustee and candidate Janet Gibson reported spending $1,707 of her $2,125.

Financial reports for the Health Care District Board and Peralta Community College District had not yet been compiled in the county registrar's office by press time.
