Storm the BastilleApril 8, 2008Some Alamedans are wondering why AUSD and its elected officials have not been able to "fix" the funding inequities of Alameda by just storming Sacramento. Rob Siltanen's blog entry Tectonic Plates, Pie and Measure H is a good introduction to the complexity of the problem and then Rob provides an update on current litigation strategy. For the record, AUSD has been actively lobbying Sacramento. In December, 2007, AUSD representatives presented Senator Perata with a legislative wish list. In February, 2008, thanks to the efforts to Trish Spencer and the PTA council, close to a thousand letters were delivered to state legislators. In response to 2007 budget cuts, Alameda for Better Schools began examining options for a legal challenge to the funding inequity problem. In June, 2007, Ann Casper and Rob Siltanen presented a progress report on mounting a legal challenge. California Education Coalition Site

Pancakes Anyone?April 23, 2008The Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast is coming up May 18. Typically, the funds generated by this event would go into our Foundation account, to be dispersed to worthy organizations at the end of the year. This year, however, due to the school budget crisis, the Kiwanis Board has decided to re-adjust their goal for the event higher, and to dedicate all the proceeds to the Alameda Education Foundation. Here are the additional details for this event.Middle School SportsMarch 14, 2008At a PTA Council meeting last evening and AEF rep announced if the parcel tax passes, the athletic directors from the two schools have agreed to having the $53,000 raised by the KNBR event given to restoring middle school athletics for one year.
Next StepsMarch 7, 2008The Board of Education action to enact $976,000 in 2008/09 reductions is only the first step in the painful process of dealing with proposed reductions to education funding. What Can You Do East Bay legislators support education and are demanding that the Legislature look at revenue solutions as well as the expense reduction only approach proposed by the Governor. Therefore, contacting your friends and relatives throughout the State especially in Republican districts to force a balanced approach to solving the state budget crisis is crucial. You can even try to balance the State budget at this interactive website Next Ten. At local level you can volunteer to support the emergency parcel tax by signing up at Keep Alameda Schools Excellent.
